Catching Up With Cristian Alvarado
Since we last spoke with Cristian Alvarado, he was three-quarters of the way through the Leadership Empowerment Apprenticeship Program (LEAP). During the final stage of the program, Cristian delved into the managerial experience with hands-on training, learning how to oversee a dining department. His days consisted of supporting the onsite Account Managers, conducting food orders, and setting up menus while studying for his Certified Dietary Manager (CDM) exam.
Today, Cristian has become the 39th Healthcare Services Group (HCSG) apprentice to graduate from LEAP. Cristian has made incredible strides throughout the 12-month program. He mentioned, “I grew up professionally and personally throughout my time with LEAP. This experience was informative, exciting, and rewarding. This program provides opportunities to people like myself, who may not have a higher education background. I didn’t attend college, and this program allowed me to develop my career.”
Cristian emphasized how much he enjoyed the hands-on learning aspect of LEAP. He said, “The program takes you through every position in the kitchen, so when you manage an account, you will know all the elements of each role. I also learned how long certain tasks should take, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently when crafting meals.”
Cristian’s perspective has evolved tremendously since training in a managerial position. He reflected, “The most challenging part I’ve encountered when assisting managers is staffing concerns. We have to quickly pivot to other options when a team member is sick, or when we need to fill positions on short notice. It was helpful to have my managers’ support to learn how to problem-solve and adapt quickly.”
Recently, Cristian passed his CDM exam and is looking to secure an Account Manager role with HCSG. He expressed, “The entire goal of LEAP is to reach managerial status, so I’m excited to step into an Account Manager role when the opportunity arises. I’ve learned many skills that I can apply wherever I end up to better support my team in running a great facility that serves the best possible care to residents.”
Cristian advises those searching for career growth opportunities to be proactive. He exclaimed, “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and advocate for yourself. Always ask questions and offer support to your team members whenever you can. I’m grateful for this chance to grow within HCSG and am excited for what’s to come!”
